NW basic education delegate decries sexual harassment of girls

From Michael Ndi in Bamenda

The alarming rate of sexual exploitation of the girl-child in the North West region has pricked the North West regional delegate for basic education in particular and other basic education stakeholders in general.
The regional delegate, Susan Fon Nyanga who raised the issue during the launching ceremony of Cameroon Journalists for Children and Health Ngo, instanced several cases of pregnancies recorded amongst primary school children in the region. She cited a case in Bafut where a teacher was reported to have impregnated 29 schools pupils.
Susan Fon lauded the efforts of the initiators of the Cameroon Journalists for Children and Health, CJCH, hoping that the association will help to expose cases of child rights abuse in the region for the perpetrators to be pinished.
Meantime, the representative of North West governor, corroborated the basic education delegate by opining that CJCH is a special platform formed by journalists not only to report on children’s health, but to make ample proposals to enable stakeholders forge ahead in the cases of children’s health. “It should be noted that children are part of the marginalized community and everyone has abused the rights of children in one way or the other”.
The governor’s representative enjoined CJCH officials to strictly follow the roles of the association.
Observing that investing in children is safeguarding future generation and building a nation fit for children, the pioneer president of CJCH, Nyincho Hilary, said that it was timely that the organization was launched at the time when Ebola has become the greatest killer. “The official launching of CJCH meant to vulgarize and create an effective and sustainable platform for cooperation and partnership between a pool of news reporters and stakeholders in the area of public health campaign initiatives and children welfare in Cameroon,” the president noted.
He added that they will soon launch a website which will showcase the success stories in health initiatives and most importantly sensitize the public on such campaigns and above all, highlight efforts of the government of Cameroon through the ministry of public health and specific programmes in working for children welfare and the amelioration of health challenges.
The launching witnessed the active participation of stakeholders like UNICEF, Plan Cameroon, CBC health services and the World Health Organization.
