Kumba: Cross-fire between police & arm robbers leaves 2 dead

From Njingang Godwin in Kumba

The Commonwealth Avenue in Kumba was the scene of action August 15 between elements of the special intervention unit of the police, ESIR and three armed robbers. The scuffle led to the death of two of the men of the underworld while one is currently under medical attention.
The police have however refused to recognise the third victim who was admitted to hospital. The assistant commissioner of the Kumba first district police station has told journalists that the police recognises only the two who were shot dead instantly.
According to him, the two victims, Issa Amadou Age, 31 and 40 year-old Saudo Hasan were in possession of two guns, twelve bullets, a knife and two telephones.
Security reports say the pirates left Bamenda for a special mission to rob some institutions in the town. The targeted institutions, reports say included the famous Ngassa bookshop and the Kumba Central Catholic Church.
But while at the Commonwealth Avenue, their cover was blown and the information immediately leaked to the police who invaded the beer parlour in which they had stopped over.
Attempts by the police to quiz them reportedly led to stiff resistance and later gunshots. The two camps got mired in a continual cross-fire. The police succeeded to kill two of the pirates while one sustained grave injuries and was ferried to hospital.
The central police commissioner, Wilson Njume who led the command unit of the police told journalists that “the police force is always ready for any unforeseen circumstances; the population has to collaborate with the police to feed them with the necessary information concerning any strange being in their community.”
