Bui
tree planting visit
From
Willibroad B. Nformi in Kumbo
National
assembly speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril
who was in Kumbo on Thursday, September 13 for the tree planting
expedition, to fight climate change; snubbed not only the SDF parliamentary
group leader and MP for Kumbo central but also the women folk who turned out in
large numbers to welcome him.
Even though received on
arrival in Kumbo by Hon. Joseph L. Banadzem, Cavaye turned down a reception by
the MP for Kumbo central and SDF parliamentary group leader in his Njavnyuy
residence.
“As the SDF parliamentary
group leader and MP for Kumbo central, I think it was necessary for him to have
a stop in my residence, refresh himself before continuing to Nkambe”, Hon
Banadzem told this reporter regrettably.
Still
in line with Cavaye’s snobbish attitude, the women who turned out in their
numbers in over 20 groups and waited patiently from 10am to about 4,30pm when
the house speaker and his entourage trooped in had a more bitter story to tell
than the SDF MP. The women gave the second personality of the republic a
standing ovation in song and dance as he alighted from his car; but he simply
passed by as though to say “I did not come here for you people”.
Apparently convinced
that Cavaye would have time after the ceremony to commune with them, the
anxious women waited for long hours to shake hands with their august guest but
were further greatly disappointed when it dawned to them that he had planted
the symbolic tree and left. As they left disappointedly, many of the women were
overheard cursing Cavaye and wished that he never sets foot in Kumbo again.
In what has been seen
as a damage control, the SDO for Bui, Ngone Ndodemesape Bernard in a communiqué
over local radio stations here in Kumbo has since been calling on the women
leaders to stop by in his office for matters concerning them. This, it is
believed, is a move to appease the women who made the occasion what it was with
their massive turn out.
Meanwhile,
addressing the population earlier, Hon. Cavaye painted a gloomy picture of
floods situation in the country; saying his mission out here was-to fight the
phenomenon of climate change.
Speaking
earlier, the executive president of the Pan African Parliamentary Network on
Climate Change, Hon Cyprian Awudu Mbaya, insisted that climate change has
neither political colour nor territorial boundaries. He said it needs no
passport or laisser-passer to enter any where.
He said according to UN statistics,
about 350,000people die every year as a result of climate change. He intimated
that if nothing is done to curb the phenomenon, in the next 20 years, one million
people will be dying yearly due to climate change. He went ahead to explain
that of the former figure, 75percent are in Africa.
For
her part, the representative of the minister of women’s empowerment and the
family, Emelienne Kamcho said climate change had resulted to the disappearance
of market gardening and fishing activities that women usually carried out in
streams and rivers.
Welcoming the august
guest to Kumbo, Kumbo 1st deputy mayor, Lukong Margaret Beri said
the tree planting operation dubbed “One woman, one tree” corresponded squarely
in her council’s project of “One child, and one tree” initiated in 2006. She
explained that each child being registered in her civil status service is
entitled to a tree which is planted and taken care of by the parents.
