55 new US Peace Corps volunteers arrive Cameroon

The U.S. Embassy is happy to announce that on Friday September 21, 2012 fifty -five (55) new trainees will arrive to work in the Health, Environment, and Youth Development programs, bringing the total number of Peace Corps Volunteers in Cameroon to more than 200.  This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps’ presence in Cameroon.  The first U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers arrived in Cameroon on September 13, 1962.  Peace Corps Volunteers have been serving in Cameroon continuously since then.  Over 3,300 Volunteers have worked in all ten regions of the country.
President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961 to promote world peace and friendship.  The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries.  From that inspiration grew a U.S. government agency devoted to world peace and friendship.
Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.  Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.
