From Carine
Takusi,

Some ophthalmologists in Douala have warned city
dwellers against health risks involved in the
excessive exposure of the eyes to modern technological
gadgets without precaution.
The warning was made by eye specialists at the
Acha annex
hospital
in Bepanda-Douala on October 9, during the commemoration
of the World Sight Day 2014.
During the event at Acha annex
hospital
Douala,
eye specialists said the use of gadgets such as iPods, iPads, smart
phones, computer, laptops and others for
long period of time is dangerous to the eyes,
thus advised that users of such gadgets should refrain from the practice.
According to one of the ophthalmologists,
Alice Nchifor, prolong use of the computer with the eyes focused on
the monitor leads to eye fatigue, headache and pain in the head. She continued
that users of such gadgets like computers should always check the distance
between them and the computer and adjust the lightening.
The ophthalmologists further
said people
should avoid
straining the eyes for too long and should always
take a
rest while
working on a computer.
Last week’s event was characterized
by
consultation and treatment of eye diseases in most hospitals in the country.
After the consultation, doctors disclosed that glaucoma
and cataract where the most prevailing eye diseases diagnosed.
According to specialists, most people were
diagnosed of glaucoma, a common eye problem in today’s society. As such, people
were called upon to regularly check for
these common
diseases.
Being a global celebration,
Limbe also celebrated the day with a two day free
